In solidarity, AMWJU to cease work today

IMPHAL, Jul 21: An emer-gency meeting of the stan- ding committee of All Mani-pur Working Journalists’ Union (AMWJU) which was held in the evening today has strongly con-demned the intrusion and threats by armed persons who identified themselves as HPC(D) cadres at the residence of S Singlianmang Guite, correspondent of The Sangai Express, at around 11.45 am today, as infringement on the free-dom of media.
The Ukhrul District Journalists Union has also strongly condemned the threats issued against Guite by the armed persons.
Chaired by AMWJU president Khogendra Khomdram, the meeting resolved to show solidarity and support the demands that have been put forward by Manipur Hill Journalist Union in connection with the incident. Accordingly, it was decided that in support of the cease work strike being launched by the Manipur Hill Journalists’ Union, AMWJU will suspend normal duty and staged a sit-in-protest at Keishampat from 10 am to 5 pm tomorrow.
On account of the proposed sit-in-protest de- monstration, no newspapers will hit the news stands on July 23 and there would be no news telecast by ISTV. With exception to AIR reviewer, no AMWJU member would also cover the ongoing Assembly session tomorrow.

RIMS PG student abducted, rescued, Casualty shut

IMPHAL, Jul 20 : Infu-riated over the abduction of one of their colleagues, PG students of RIMS closed down the Casualty Ward of the hospital for sometime this afternoon.
A group of RIMS students including three PG students and another ten doing internship were returning to Imphal from Rural Health Centre of Saikot, Churachandpur today.
On the way, they were halted by some unidentified persons at about 3.15 pm at Molnom located about three kms from CCpur district headquarters and abducted Kunal Chakravar-ty, a PG student from Tri- pura.
The team was returning after picking up 10 students doing internship from Chu-rachandpur in a bus that belongs to RIMS.
The armed persons then questioned who the seniors were and as out of the three PG students, the two others were girls, Chakra-varty was taken away by the armed persons.
Immediately after receiving information about the abduction, RIMS students closed Casualty Ward at about 4.15 pm and ghe-raoed the administrative block demanding rescue of Kunal Chakravarty within 24 hours.
Kunal Chakravarty was fortunately rescued by a team of Bishnupur police commandos and Assam Rifles at the general area of Saikot later.
Police source said that the abductors may belong to a group which is under the SoO agreement between the State Government, Centre and a number of Kuki armed groups.
Police source said that the motive of the abductors may not have been serious, for they found the medical student on the road. A case has been registered at CCpur police station in connection with the incident.
Meanwhile, RIMS Superintendent, Dr Y Mohen has urged the PG students to open the Casualty ward as the abducted doctor has been rescued. However till the time of filing this report at 9.25 pm, the Casualty ward of RIMS remained closed
